London Hotels » Thistle Piccadilly » Local Attractions Thistle PiccadillyLocal AttractionsLeicester SquareLeicester Square (pronounced Lester) is located in the heart of London's West End; north of Trafalgar Square, between Piccadily and Covent Garden, and close to Chinatown, Soho and Shaftsbury Avenue. It is named after the Earl of Leicester's Royal Mansion that once stood here - it was demolished in 1791. Leicester Square is now a bustling pedestrianised area surrounded by buildings housing several of London's largest cinemas - The Empire was once a music hall of the same name, built in 1884 and said to have shown the first moving pictures in Britain. Thousands of people turn out in Leicester Square for the premieres of big films. This is also a great place to pick up official cut-price theatre tickets from the 'Half-Price Ticket Booth' Distance: 0.09 Miles China Town London's China Town is in the heart of Soho, off Shaftesbury Avenue and just a short walk from Leicester Square, and the scene of annual celebrations for the Chinese New Year. Popular restaurants include Golden Dragon, Lee Ho Fook and Harbour City, all on Gerrard Street. Nearest tube access is Leicester Square. Distance: 0.14 Miles Piccadilly Circus A famous London Landmark where the statue of Eros stands overlooked by huge neon advertising signs. Close to soho, the shops of Carnaby Street and most of the theatres. Distance: 0.15 Miles Apollo Shaftesbury Major West End theatre with a reputation for staging light comedy and farce. Distance: 0.13 Miles Criterion Theatre Apart from the box office area, the whole theatree is underground and is reached by desending a strikingly tiled stairway! Distance: 0.10 Miles Haymarket Theatre Royal Perhaps the most beautiful theatre in London, relatively large and traditionally showing classic quality plays. Distance: 0.09 Miles Lyric Shaftesbury The Lyric Theatre is the oldest surviving of all the theatres currently on Shaftesbury Avenue. Distance: 0.12 Miles Prince of Wales Theatre The first theatre on this site was The Prince's Theatre which was designed by C J Phipps. This theatre was opened in January 1884 and was demolished in 1937 to make was for the larger present theatre. Currently showing 'Mamma Mia!'. Distance: 0.02 Miles Queen's Theatre The Queen's Theatre was designed as a twin to the Globe Theatre (now called the Gielgud Theatre). On the 24 September 1940 a bomb fell on the theatre destroying the entire front of house area along with the rear stalls! Currently showing 'Les Miserables'. Distance: 0.12 Miles piccadilly circus Piccadilly Circus tube station is on the Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines, at the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Regent Street. It is a short walk away from The Trocadero Centre, Lilywhites and Fortnum and Mason, as well as many well-known theatres, including The Apollo Theatre, Her Majesty's Theatre and The Lyric.
