Leicester Square
Leicester Square (pronounced Lester) is located in the heart of London's West End; north of Trafalgar Square, between Piccadily and Covent Garden, and close to Chinatown, Soho and Shaftsbury Avenue. It is named after the Earl of Leicester's Royal Mansion that once stood here - it was demolished in 1791. Leicester Square is now a bustling pedestrianised area surrounded by buildings housing several of London's largest cinemas - The Empire was once a music hall of the same name, built in 1884 and said to have shown the first moving pictures in Britain. Thousands of people turn out in Leicester Square for the premieres of big films. This is also a great place to pick up official cut-price theatre tickets from the 'Half-Price Ticket Booth'
